After treating hundreds of pro athletes, we have discovered that in order to get well and heal properly we must find out what is causing your pain first. Spinal decompression therapy techniques are often used in the treatment of back problems.

While these kinds of treatments are popular in Utah, they are often misused.Using Medical Imaging to Diagnose Back Pain is Most Often Worthless. The most common diagnostic tests that doctors order on those who suffer from back pain are medical imaging tests.

Doctors are quick to order X-rays, CAT scans and expensive MRI's for both acute and chronic back pain, but new evidence points to the fact that slipped disks, degenerative changes and even herniated disks and compression fractures are simply normal variations that occur in the aging process.

This seems extremely counterintuitive and even paradigm-shifting for most who have back pain. But even having said that, the most important part of the treatment of any pain or discomfort is finding the right diagnosis.

Treating the cause, not just the symptoms. Now as easy as that sounds, a lot of chiropractors in Utah and other areas, treat the symptoms, without delving into the cause. This leads to excessive visits and a lighter wallet, both of which are totally unnecessary.

When you visit a Utah chiropractor or physical therapist, you will find in most cases they want to treat the pain. You must find out what is causing your pain, not just treat the symptoms. When most of us get a headache, we take an aspirin and call it good. With little regard to what caused the headache. Seems reasonable and that's the way most of us have been taught.

The secret to finding a way to live pain free is to listen to your body and get the right diagnosis with the help of a properly trained professional who focuses on treating the cause first. Now in Salt Lake City Utah we are one of the only chiropractic offices to take this approach.

Back pain is a symptom. Common causes of back pain involve disease or injury to the muscles, bones, and/or nerves of the spine. Pain arising from abnormalities of organs within the abdomen, pelvis, or chest may also be felt in the back.

This is called referred pain. Nerve root syndromes are those that produce symptoms of nerve impingement (a nerve is directly irritated), often due to a herniation (or bulging) of the disc between the lower back bones. Sciatica is an example of nerve root impingement. Impingement pain tends to be sharp, affecting a specific area.

When should you see a doctor for your back and neck pain and discomfort?

A. Your Pain Persists and Doesn't Go Away
Has your pain lasted longer than 3 weeks? If so, it may be chronic pain.

B. Your Legs Go Numb or Weak When You Walk
If you have numbness or weakness in your legs when you walk, you should speak to your doctor about the possibility of spinal stenosis.

C. Your Pain Radiates Down One Leg
If you have pain down your leg, you may have sciatica, as this is the main symptom. Generally, sciatica symptoms are caused by damage to one or more spinal structures, which in turn put pressure on a nerve, irritating it.

D. You Have Had a Fall, Accident or Other Trauma
If you have recently been injured via a fall, blow or accident and you have back pain, it may have been caused by this trauma.

E. You Are Having Bowel or Bladder Problems, Or Your Legs Keep Getting Weaker
If you are having problems controlling your bladder or bowel and/or your legs have been growing progressively weaker, you should see a doctor or go to the emergency room immediately. These are possible symptoms of cauda equina syndrome, a type of back pain that is a medical emergency.

F. Your Pain Keeps You Up At Night
If your back pain actually gets worse when you rest, or keeps you up at night, it is most likely not life-threatening but should still be investigated.

The sooner you can get chronic pain accurately diagnosed and treated, the more successful your treatment is likely to be.
